Baked Chocolate Old Fashioned Doughnuts
baked, not fried, but still delicious
Chocolate Old Fashioned Doughnuts

I’ve never tried to hide the fact that I LOVE doughnuts.
I love them SO much.
Especially a glazed old fashioned.
I try not to think about them, and then when my dad was visiting last week, he surprised the kids with doughnuts for breakfast.
Now I know some of you are strong, and can sip happily on your green smoothie while watching others enjoy delicious, sticky, sweet, fried dough. Hooray for you. I am not that person. If I see them, I must eat them. Just staring at that pink bakery box is enough to get my stomach growling.
I enjoyed my glazed old fashioned with just a hint of guilt, but unfortunately have been thinking about it ever since.
I could have made these glazed copycat krispy kreme doughnuts, but I really was not in the mood to fry {de-greasing the kitchen was not how I wanted to spend my night}
So I decided to try and make old fashioned {my favorite} in a baked version, and then I made them chocolate just cause, and of course they had to get a glaze bath.
You don’t need to tell me they don’t taste exactly the the real deal, I’m well aware of that, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t delicious.
They are, and because they’re baked and not fried, my fitbit doesn’t hate me.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups flour {I used King Arthur AP flour}
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1 Tbsp butter {melted}
- For the Glaze –
- 1 cup of powdered sugar
- 3 – 4 Tbsp buttermilk
- 1/4 tsp vanilla
Instructions
- combine all of the dry ingredients
- whisk together buttermilk, egg, and butter
- add to the dry ingredients, and combine
- knead a few times on a well floured surface
- roll to about 1/4 inch
- cut using a doughnut cutter
- place on a lined baking sheet {use one for the doughnuts and another for the doughnut holes}
- bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven – 10 minutes for the doughnuts {4 -5 minutes for the doughnut holes}
- make the glaze while the doughnuts are baking
- whisk together the powdered sugar, 3 Tbsp buttermilk, and the vanilla – adding more milk 1 tsp at a time until you have the desired consistency
- cool slightly before glazing
- allow the glaze to dry completely before storing in an airtight container
For the doughnuts you can substitute yogurt or sour cream for the buttermilk, or make your own buttermilk and you can also use milk or cream for the glaze, whichever you prefer and have on hand.
I made 12 doughnuts with 12 doughnut holes, but you could simply roll the dough into balls to make doughnut holes if you don’t have doughnut cutter {but I do love my doughnut cutter and it was super cheap}
You could even thin the batter just a bit by using more milk/sour cream/ or yogurt and pour into muffin tins to make doughnut muffins {bake for 20 minutes}
Enjoy!
Seriously the best donuts I have seen in a LONG time. Amazing!!

I crave doughnuts all the time! I have never made them, as I am scared that I would be forced to eat them all. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe, I can not wait to try it
doughnuts are my biggest weakness, I just cannot say no
Yum! These look wonderful! I am the same way. If someone has a donut, I want one too:)
Wow, this looks really good. The idea of baked donuts seems really good, especially since it’s a lot easier.
definitely easier than frying ?

These look marvelous! I have a cup of coffee that is looking for this donut!
YES!! I think my coffee is always looking for a doughnut (or two)
Holy cow, these look fantastic! I love the contrast of the white glaze and the chocolate donuts. It makes my tummy grumble just looking at them!
thanks Miranda, I do have a serious weakness for a glazed doughnut
My favorite is the fried doughnuts. They remind me of my grandma because she used to make them for us. I will have to try your baked recipe!
my favorite is the fried too – but these baked are infinitely easier and almost as good ?
I love homemade donuts so much! These look delicious enough for me to try baked. ?
I love all the doughnuts too much!
This looks delicious!
thanks Allie
I was just looking at a Mark Bittman article on how to make homemade doughnuts, but his required deep frying, so I put the article aside, thinking – “no way.” These however, look eminently do-able and also amazing. So now I just have to think about whether I can bear the psychic pain of having to repent after I make them ?
totally worth the repenting ?
“hooray for you” – HA! exactly, I am eating the doughnut.
these look fantastic!
I will always be eating the doughnut ?
These are glazy perfection!
thanks Brianne, I happen to agree with you
Yeah, I can’t have a green smoothie while surrounded by doughnut-eaters, either.
those that can are a total mystery to me ?
Chocolate glazed are my all-time favorite doughnuts! I’ve got to try these!!
mine too Martha, and I don’t really like chocolate
Yum!!! These look so amazing!! I’m definitely giving these a try.
thanks Karen, and I hope you enjoy them
