Soft White Sandwich Rolls

My kids are picky eaters. One is actually much pickier than the other, but still I usually hear it from both at least once during the day.
This is not news; I’ve mentioned it many times before.
One likes pasta, one doesn’t. One loves burgers, the other won’t eat meat. Neither really loves fish, or chicken, or pork…
What do they like? Pizza, caesar salad, and sandwiches. Of course the fussier of them will only eat a sandwich on a homemade roll, and only if it’s a soft roll.

This recipe, originally from King Arthur Flour, is by far the BEST roll for sandwiches; just ask Stella.
Ingredients
- 1 envelope of active dry yeast
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 3 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
- 3/4 cup lukewarm milk
- 3 tablespoons butter, softened or melted
Instructions
- whisk together the yeast, sugar, salt, and flour
- add the milk and butter
- using the dough hook knead until you have a smooth dough {about 5 minutes}
- cover the dough and let rise 1 1/2 – 2 hours
- divide the dough into 8 pieces
- roll into a smooth ball
- cover and let rise another hour
- bake at 350 for 20 minutes
- {brush with melted butter when they are still hot to create a softer crust}

enjoy!
Ohhh these look amazing Heather! I need to try them ASAP! Thanks for the super easy recipe!
thanks Kelley, they really are super easy to make
My brother was a really picky eater as a kid too! He only ate hamburgers with ketchup (no other condiments or toppings), cheese pizza, grilled cheese, and plain pasta with Kraft Parmesan cheese. If we had spaghetti sauce, it couldn’t have onions. Oh, and PB & honey sandwiches. But I think that’s it. He loved bread though, so your soft rolls would’ve been a total hit!
definitely NO onion here either
At my work the chefs cook fresh rolls about three times a week and they cool just outside my office- and as they know I love them so much the cooks will tempt me!!! Ugh nothing in the world is like homemade bread!!! These rolls look awesome!!
truly, nothing beats freshly baked bread or rolls
Am I reading this correctly in that the recipe only makes 8 sandwich rolls? In any event, what temp do you bake them at and for how long?
yes, it makes 8, and in the recipe it calls for a temp of 350 baked for 20 minutes
That’s so nice that you’ll cater to their fussiness! My mom would just smack me if I ever didn’t want to eat something. “Eat that or eat nothing and be hungry and DIE.”
She obviously wasn’t going to let me die but hey, it did the trick. I’ll eat just about anything as long as it’s vegan =)
I try not to cater too much, and there are plenty of nights they leave the table hungry instead of eating what I make. I’m hoping that one day they will learn to eat more
Thanks for sharing with us at MM tonight Heather… these look light and fluffy! Pinned.
thank you Deb
Homemade bread is always the best!
I could not agree more

Heather, I have those picky eaters at my house, too! I have hope that the youngest will grow out of it as my older boys did. (Now the boys will eat anything… even sushi!) These rolls are going to be a huge hit at my house with the whole fam!
fingers crossed my kids learn to experiment more ? hope you enjoy the rolls

Not sure what went wrong, but my dough didn’t rise at all and I ended up with small baseballs. Not soft, but dense. Don’t you have to activate yeast before adding to recipe? Very disappointed.
it could be your yeast, some ust work better than others – I always use Red Star, and add it directly to the dry ingredients, using a very warm liquid
