glazed doughnut holes
the perfect post trick-or-treating snack
glazed doughnut holes
I LOVE Halloween.
Growing up, it was a BIG deal. My sister and I always had the best homemade costumes. My dad was the scariest Dracula, hanging out on the porch passing out candy and scaring the neighborhood kids. We trick-or-treated for HOURS, and then went to our grandparents’ houses for even more candy.
Once the costumes came off and the candy was sorted we had cider and doughnuts, watched scary movies, and told ghost stories. My mom is the queen of ghost stories. Really scary ghost stories.
My kids have now grown out of the trick-or-treating phase, I don’t tell ghost stories like my mom did, but we still LOVE the cider and doughnuts and scary movie parts of Halloween.
We always had dunkin’ munchkins with our cider, but with no dunkin’ donuts nearby, and the doughnuts from the store not being anywhere near worth the calories consumed, homemade doughnut holes it is.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbsp butter, melted
- for the glaze –
- 2 cps of powdered sugar
- 1 Tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- heat oil to 350 degrees
- whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt
- add sugar, buttermilk, egg, and melted butter
- mix until combined
- drop by tablespoonful (a cookie scoop works well) into the hot oil
- fry until golden brown
- drain on brown paper bags or paper towels
- to make the glaze – combine the powdered sugar with the milk and vanilla, and stir until smooth
- roll doughnut holes in the glaze, and place on a baking rack to allow the glaze to firm up
you are going to want to get over that fear of frying
enjoy!
Homemade is better than storebought anyways! Love the pics- pinning ?
thanks Medha, and I totally agree (even worth the frying)
I’m not a huge Halloween fan, but I AM a doughnut fan. I need these!
I don’t like the constant knock on the door part, but the candy and doughnuts make up for that ?
Homemade is always best and I would love to hear one of your Mom’s scary stores, how fun! And your doughnut holes…..drooling!
